Eagle Rocks Thracian Sanctuary
Eagle Rocks Thracian Sanctuary
About this place
Eagle Rocks lies about 2.5 km southeast of Ardino in the Eastern Rhodopes and is one of Bulgaria's most mysterious Thracian sanctuaries. Its roughly 30-metre rock massif contains 97 rectangular niches carved into almost vertical faces. Archaeologists associate them with Thracian rituals honouring the dead and ancestors.
The surroundings are both archaeologically valuable and exceptionally scenic. The summit overlooks green Rhodope hills and nearby villages. A nature trail through beautiful woodland leads to the sanctuary and is accessible on foot or by mountain bike.
Eagle Rocks is often associated with the mysticism and spirituality of ancient civilisations. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of a sacred place used more than two millennia ago.
