Patmos Fortress

Patmos Fortress stands near Ardino in a scenic area above the Arda. It belongs to a network of ancient fortifications built in Roman and Byzantine times to protect important Rhodope roads and passes. From its high rocky terrace it controlled the route between the Aegean region and inland Bulgaria.

Excavations reveal substantial walls, towers and buildings that testify to its former significance. The summit offers a panorama of green hills and the winding Arda, combining natural beauty with a sense of history.

Today Patmos attracts history enthusiasts and hikers. Scenic paths to the fortress offer walks through the wild Rhodope countryside.
