About this place
Krivus is a medieval fortress on a high rocky massif above the Arda, about 6 km east of Ardino. Its strategic position controlled roads and river crossings. It is believed to have been used in Byzantine times and later during the Second Bulgarian Empire.
The surviving massive walls, defensive towers and rooms reflect its military importance. Historians describe Krivus as a guard post for trading and military caravans between the Aegean region and the Rhodope interior.
Today scenic nature trails lead to the fortress, revealing views of the Arda's bends and green hills. It is a favourite destination for hikers, photographers and history enthusiasts.
